Faith in Times of Turmoil:
150 Years Since the Civil War
On Sunday, October 19, Providence will pause to remember our history and the faith of those who lived during Civil War times. Founded in 1807, Providence Church was a small country church that not only survived the war but has been a faithful witness through these many years. As our country marks the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, we will examine and be inspired by the faith of those who lived and died, North, South, soldier, civilian, black and white.
Here are the plans for the day:
- Worship at 9 am and 11 am will include a dramatic and musical tribute, hymns that were beloved then and now, and our pastor’s sermon entitled, “Our Past and Our Future: Keeping the Faith.”
- History Presentation, 9:55, Sanctuary. Hear about our church’s history during the 1800’s and the role of religion throughout the war.
- Time Travel Event, 9:55, Social Hall. Children, youth, adults and families will visit stations that explore life in the 1880’s including music, toy making, food, prayer and the Bible, coloring and activity pages.
- Visit the library, see our church history and other special displays. Take a walk to the cemetery and locate the graves of people who lived during civil war times, including one soldier.
